Symptoms Of Diabetes That Are Often Overlooked

Many people think of diabetes as it is portrayed on TV. They see someone going into diabetic convulsions or taking injections of insulin. In reality most people go to their doctor to have a blood test and find out they are diabetic. But what most people are not aware of is the symptoms of diabetes are often overlooked for a long period of time. One of the first things to look for is your family history. If one or both parents had diabetes then it is a good idea to get tested often. While some “experts” will say that genetics is the largest factor of diabetes, it is actually lifestyle that plays the biggest role. Many children have the same eating habits and lack of exercise routines that their parents had. They are learned traits.

What are some of the typical symptoms of diabetes to look for? Some of the most common symptoms will include intense hunger, frequent urination and a constant thirst. Many people will conclude their frequent urination is due to drinking large amounts of fluid to satisfy their thirst especially when they are working hard or work in the heat. They will also conclude that the fatigue and weight loss they are experiencing are a result of working and not symptoms of diabetes.

Regardless of how you came to having diabetes, knowing some of the risk factors and treating the issue can prevent it from creating more havoc in your body. Being overweight is a common cause for people who develop Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult diabetes, although not everyone with the symptoms of diabetes is overweight.

If the symptoms of diabetes are not treated they can cause many other health related issues. Blindness from retina damage is caused by diabetes more than any other disease and occurs when diabetes is not treated. Amputations of the hands or feet can occur due to poor circulation of the vascular system. Other symptoms of diabetes can include kidney failure, liver damage and coronary heart problems.

A good exercise program and maintaining a proper weight has been shown to delay and prevent the onset of diabetes. Many of them were high candidates for diabetes due to genetics and other factors. Just make sure that when the symptoms of diabetes occur you should maintain a healthy diet and exercise program. They are the best methods of prevention and control.

If you are over 60 you are most at risk of having diabetes. Approximately 80 percent of people over the age of 60 have many symptoms of diabetes. This is the result of a lifetime of poor eating habits and low exercise levels. It is never too late eat right and exercise. As the saying goes, “When would NOW be a good time to start?”
