Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes today. Type 2 diabetes occurs in the body when your liver doesn’t produce enough insulin or it can’t control the glucose in the blood. It is discovered using a blood test to determine the amount of sugar or increase of glucose in the blood. If it is caught early it can be controlled by changes in your diet and exercise activity before more severe symptoms occur.
If your sugar levels are too high your doctor may put you on insulin to keep your blood sugar down within a normal level. You should also check your blood sugar levels on a daily basis and note any changes to your doctor. If diet and exercise are working your doctor may reduce or completely eliminate your need for medications. But you should always consult your doctor before changing any of your medications on your own.
A lack of a good healthy diet and a lack of exercise or activity is the biggest factor in getting diabetes. 55% of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. A person with a genetic tendency may acquire a diabetic blood sugar with less effort than someone who doesn’t have this but this is a small percentage of the population of persons with Type 2 diabetes. Again it is diet and exercise that are the greatest known contributors.
If diabetes goes untreated then other more serious health issues can occur. By ignoring the need to properly diagnose and treat Type 2 diabetes a person is at risk for the symptoms that a high blood sugar can cause. High blood pressure is a commonality with Type 2 diabetes and it can cause heart disease and coronary artery disease. It can cause dysfunction with the liver, kidney disease and even blindness.
Other variations of diabetes include Type 1 diabetes also known as Juvenile Diabetes. Type1 diabetes is also rising due primarily to an increasing number of obese children. Children need to exercise and maintain a good healthy diet to keep their weight at a healthy level and prevent them from getting diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. It usually disappears after the baby is born but these mothers may have an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Diabetes is a disease that can be treated and reversed. If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise program your risk of feeling the more severe symptoms drops dramatically. Two great resources to examine include “The PH Miracle for Diabetes” by Dr. Robert Young, and The People’s Chemist. Just remember that doing nothing will not help you get better. You have to take action.
